SMD

SMD

Building a site that puts SMD's projects on the map: a portfolio, a timeline and a live project map their own team keeps up to date.

SMD (Spacemaker Developments) is a commercial construction company working across the East of England and beyond, delivering education, residential, religious and heritage projects, much of it through procurement frameworks. Their old site no longer reflected the scale of work they were winning, and they couldn't update it themselves.

One project record, used everywhere

Each SMD project is a structured record: location, client, contract type, value, completion date, features. The record feeds the portfolio, where visitors filter by category and status and more results load as they scroll. It renders as a consistent project page. And because it carries a pinned location, it reaches the map too.

A map of what they've built

The project map reads from the site's own data and plots each job as a pin, colour-coded by status: live, new, completed. Click a pin and the project opens in place, with a photo, a title and a link through to the full case study. When SMD publishes a project in WordPress, the pin appears. There is no second dataset to keep in step with the first.

The company history, down one page

SMD's story gets the same treatment. The timeline lays out dated milestones as alternating cards, each opening into the full account. We built it as a reusable content block, so the team adds the next milestone the same way they add a news post.

A site they run themselves

We build with bespoke content blocks instead of a page builder. Heroes, carousels, team grids, testimonials, stats, accordions, calls to action: we designed and built each one, and SMD's team assembles them into pages. The blocks carry the design with them, so the pages SMD composes remain consistent and on-brand.

Considered under the surface

Staged icon reveals and counting stats animate as you scroll, and each one respects visitors who prefer reduced motion. Underneath sit an optimised image pipeline, full-text search, caching, and GDPR-compliant cookie consent that holds tracking back until a visitor agrees to it.
